Grand Canyon National Park

Grand Canyon

Moderate Arizona

Overview

The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and over a mile deep — and no statistic truly prepares you for the first time you stand on the rim and look into it. Two billion years of Earth's geologic history lie exposed in the canyon's layered walls, from ancient Vishnu schist at the river to Kaibab limestone at the rim, each band of color representing a distinct chapter in the planet's story. The Colorado River, responsible for carving this chasm over six million years, still runs green and cold at the bottom. The South Rim is open year-round and draws the vast majority of visitors with its accessible overlooks, the Rim Trail connecting viewpoints over 13 miles, and the famous Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descending to the canyon floor. Bright Angel Trail follows a fault line past Indian Garden to Phantom Ranch at the bottom, while South Kaibab drops steeply along an exposed ridge with 360-degree canyon views at every turn. The North Rim, open May through October, sits 1,000 feet higher and offers a quieter, more forested experience with equally stunning views. For the full Grand Canyon experience, plan a rim-to-rim hike or a multi-day Colorado River rafting trip through the Inner Gorge. River trips, running 188 miles over 6-16 days, pass through rapids and side canyons that reveal waterfalls, ancient granaries, and geological wonders invisible from above.

Pro Tips

  • 💡 South Kaibab Trail has better views than Bright Angel but zero shade and no water — carry extra and start early
  • 💡 Do NOT attempt rim-to-river-to-rim in a single day; the park rescues overheated hikers every week in summer
  • 💡 Phantom Ranch bunks and mule rides book up over a year in advance via lottery
  • 💡 The free South Rim shuttle is the easiest way to move between viewpoints — parking is a nightmare in summer
  • 💡 The North Rim is only 10 miles across the canyon but a 4.5-hour drive — plan accordingly

Weather & Best Time to Visit

South Rim summers are warm (75-85°F) while the inner canyon exceeds 110°F. Winter brings snow to the rim but mild temperatures below. The North Rim closes in winter due to snow.

Best seasons: Spring, Fall
